Summer's Guilty Pleasure

The Tour de France.
























I actually enjoy this test of endurance. There is absolutely no way that I could ever ride a bike for six hours a day for 22 out of 24 days. I am glad to see that there is hope that yet another american (Levi Leipheimer) could win the tour. It also is nice that Levi is from Butte Montana (a little place where I just happened to grow up). I will write more about the tour later but I have one glaring observation after the first four stages: The pace has been far below average in the last two stages. Stage 3 finished an hour behind the worst expected finishing time, and Stage 4 was also slower than expected. There are a two reasons that I can think of for this happening: 1) Everyone is reporting that the riders are resting up for the the early than usual run into the Alps 2) The riders are drug free this year and it is truly taking an effect on their performance over the long stretches on the road. I think that the first is a lot more likely, but with all of the scrutiny on the drug use that has surrounded cycling lately, I think that it needs to be mentioned as a possibility.

The coming days in the mountains will show for sure if the drug free tour can keep pace with the "juiced up" tours of the last decade. I for one hope that I am wrong, but you never know.

I know you are thinking that I have now double dipped in the well of your run of the mill domestic beers two weeks in a row, you must feel that I have no imagination. Though I am fully prepared to defend this pick based on the copious amounts of this beer that will be consumed at the bachelor party that I will be attending this weekend. I see no reason to anger the beer gods by putting some fancy dancy micro brew or import on the throne of beer of the week and then go out and spend the majority of the weekend tossing back Bud Lights with reckless abandon.













In honor of Paul's last days as a free man, I here by proclaim Bud Light as beer of the week.

Axe Handle Basketball Homerun Derby

Having a 4th of July picnic?

Looking for something to enhance your beer drinking, burger eating fun?

Have I got just the game for you.

AXE HANDLE BASKETBALL HOMERUN DERBY*!!

This game is very simple, takes minimal supplies (you probably already have them), is loads of fun, and hurts like the dickens.


Supplies:

1.) Axe Handle












2.) Basketball
















3.) Fence (optional)













Ground Rules:

Pick an appropriate distance from your fence (or other homerun boundary) for the batter to stand.

Everyone else positions themselves near the fence to shag balls.

The batter throws the ball to up and tries to hit the piss out of it. For a first time batter this is generally followed by a quick drop of the axe handle and shake of the hands and possibly a comment such as "shit that hurts".

After you get a taste for the recoil that your wrists will be experiencing the game gets much easier and the ball will start to fly out of the yard.

Every batter gets 10 outs per round. Anything that is not a homerun is an out.


Like in any home run derby, the player with the most number of homeruns wins.

Being that we are celebrating our nations independence this Wednesday we need a good wholesome American beer to hold the title of beer of the week. The availability to purchase High Life in a 30 pack is a blessing in disguise during a week that provides you with an extra day to imbibe.

So go out to your nearest beer seller pick yourself up a case of High Life and have a great 4th of July.

Baseball's Greatest Play

Life Lessons

Things we learned while in Washington D.C. for the Indians - Nationals game.

1.) If you drink at a bar called the Top Shelf you are going to pay $8 for a Jack and Coke.

2.) If you pick the correct spot on the National Mall to play whiffle ball you can become part of the D.C. bus tours.

3.) The difference between a vasectomy and a mastectomy and which sex they are preformed on (special shout out to donny whistles for this info).

4.) RFK may be the shittiest stadium ever built.

5.) The 1-2-5 double play might just be the second greatest play in baseball behind the unassisted triple play.

6.) I am not cursed. The Indians finally won a game when I was in the ballpark.

Staying with the theme of non American beers I will venture a pick from north of the border.

Moosehead ranks second on my list of favorite Canadian beers, right behind Kokanee. I can't buy Kokanee in Ohio so Moosehead it is.

Summer Sports Scene

Days until college football starts: 71

Don’t get me wrong I thoroughly enjoy major league baseball, but other than that summer is a virtual sports wasteland. The162 game season starts to wear on you after awhile, the MLS is a joke regardless of what Alexi Lalas thinks, no summer Olympics, ESPN is trying to pimp the AFL (all the Mike & Mike in the world won’t make me care), and my usual summer favorite Le Tour de France is going to be over shadowed by the cycling world’s doping scandals.

Just some quick words about the Tribe:

The pitching staff has looked as good this year as any in recent memory. C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona, and Paul Byrd are a combined 23-7. Cliff Lee looked down right dominant last night (let’s hope this continues). Jason Stanford had a solid first outing and is pitching again tonight, and last but not least Jake Westbrook is expected to be called up to the big club (replacing Stanford, but you can’t have too much quality pitching hanging around) after a final rehab start in Buffalo. The bullpen has been quite reliable as well. With the Wick gone, Joe Borowski has done a solid job (20 saves vs. 2 blown) for a pitcher that does not over power people; his fast ball only reaches the low 90’s.

The offense is something that I don’t really worry about with this team. They went through a little slump in early June but now they seem to be getting it back on track.

In other words the 162 game season won’t seem so long if the Tribe can stay in first place for the duration.

This week concludes with a road trip to D.C. to catch the Indians – Nationals series at RFK and probably more beer than I will be able to handle (I can’t wait).

Pilsner Urquell

A fine Czech Beer.

From Wikipedia: Pilsner Urquell is somewhat heavier (with an almost ale-like fruitiness in the malt body) and more strongly hopped than most so-called pilseners. Saaz hops, a noble hop variety, are a key element in its flavor profile.





















So run out and get yourself a sixer and drink until you can't feel feelings anymore.

Time to give our complete attention to the Tribe

Now that the NBA Finals are over, it is time to really start paying attention to baseball. It is still a long haul until the season really starts to get interesting, but when your team is in first place it is a lot easier to watch.

Two quick notes on the NBA Finals.

1) The Spurs are the best team we have had in the NBA since I can remember paying attention (MJ's first three titles). They may not have beat all of the other NBA champions, but as far as playing team basketball no one has been better.

2) The finals portrayed a tough physical style of basketball that was difficult to watch, did we really need the idiot who sounded like a wounded rhesus monkey howling right underneath the announcers booth?
